Defectoscopy or non-destructive testing refers to a set of methods that help to detect defects and material deviations without damage or any major intervention in the product. This is a widely used method, especially in the metallurgical industry. Defectoscopy not only reveals surface defects of the material, but also reveals internal defects of the product. For the possibility of using the material or product, it is necessary that the product meets certain quality conditions. It is non-destructive testing that reveals whether the product meets these conditions or not. If the product does not meet the quality requirements, the product must be repaired or stamped, i.e. marked as a defective product.

What methods are used in defectoscopy?

Among the most used methods is X-ray inspection of the material, which is mainly used for inspection of welds and castings. Ultrasonic inspection of the material focuses on the presence of internal material defects up to a great depth below the surface. Magnetic testing is very often used in the automotive and aviation industry, energy and transport. The capillary/penetration method is suitable for investigating surface defects. Digital radiology, which uses electronic imaging systems and is used in radiology, is also an interesting method. It is about creating a visible image of the irradiated object on radiological film. Before any method used in defectoscopy, it is advisable to use the method of visual examination of the material and the product, the purpose of which is to detect defects and deviations in the shape of the product.

For the safety of manufactured products and machines, it is very important to ensure the corresponding quality of all components that are part of the product. Therefore, it is essential to entrust such an important task to the hands of experts. ALFA TEST STEEL s.r.o. is such an expert in defectoscopy, which deals with testing materials, semi-finished products and parts of equipment for the nuclear power industry and other industries.
